400 @ $150 Gets Substantial Donation from POET-Jewell

On November 29, 2012, POET Bio-refining of Jewell made a substantial donation to the South Hamilton Bands to kick off the “Strike Up The Band ... 400 @ $150” Fundraising Campaign.  Kevin Monroe, General Manager of POET-Jewell is pictured with  Principal Dryer, Mr. Klaver, Mr. Schutt, and Mr. Hemphill, giving a donation for $5,000 to be used to update the Schools Instrument Inventory.

In December of 2012, the South Hamilton Band Department launched a “Strike Up The Band” fundraiser called “400 @ $150”.  The goal of the campaign is to seek out 400 current Hawks, former Hawks, Patrons, or fans of the Band who are willing to donate $150 in order to buy school owned instruments and to replace old ones.

The estimated cost to update the band instrument inventory is $120,000.  POET generously stepped up to the plate first and got things rolling with their donation.  As an additional incentive, the South Hamilton School Board School Board has agreed to match dollar for dollar, the total amount of the contributions generated by this campaign.  The $5,000 gift from POET, coupled with the matching funds, have set things in a positive direction with $10,000 in total funds towards the Schools goal.

The “Strike Up The Band” fundraiser is similar to the “Hit the Weights Campaign” from 2011, in which community members and alumni donated $100 each in order to purchase new weight room equipment.  Through the contributions of Hawks past and present, the school is now able to boast of of the finest weight facilities for a 1A school in the state.  Having nearly completed the weight room project, the Administrative Team at South Hamilton and the School Board and have turned their attention to the band instrument inventory.

If you are an alumni, patron, a business, or fan of the Band, Join POET-Jewell “and get on the Bandwagon” by donating to this great cause.  Information on the fundraiser can be found on the schools website, or by contacting Mr. Klaver or Mr. Schutt.

Strike Up The Band

December 1, 2012

Dear Hawk Band Alumni, Fans, and Supporters,

Please let me introduce myself, my name is Tom Klaver. Some of you will know me from the class of ’89 and some will know me as the new High School Band Director at South High. Coming back home is a dream come true, and it is truly an honor to direct the Band. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the South Hamilton Community School District, I look forward to continuing and building upon the tradition of excellence established at South Hamilton.

There have been many improvements to our Band facilities since I was a student. Firstly, the “Max Whitlock Addition” of the Band Room was added in 2005, which has provided much needed instrument storage space, music library space, office space, and a loading ramp. Most recently the Band Room was given a “facelift” this past summer by being repainted, reorganized, and by refurbishing the music stands. Additionally, through the generous contributions by the S.H. Music Boosters, the Marching Band is sporting new uniforms.

With the improvements to our Band Room nearing a completion, our focus and attention has turned to the Band Instrument Inventory. We have a goal of doing a vital update and replacement of our instruments, paving the path for the next 50 years of the South Hamilton Band. The majority of the instruments are beyond repair and have simply worn out over time. Band instruments are quite expensive. For example, a student level tuba can range in price from $5,000 to $9,000 for a quality student level instrument. That being said, we are sending this letter out to our Hawk Band Alumni, fans, and Patrons to launch a “400 @ $150” fundraiser to accomplish this much needed task. As an extra incentive, our tremendously supportive School Board has agreed to match dollar for dollar, the total amount of the contributions generated by this campaign.

What a great opportunity to build upon the legacy of the SH Band by helping the School provide the instruments for the next generation of Hawks. We estimate the cost at $120,000 to update our Band Instrument Inventory. Once again, these instruments are student level not professional grade, which cost even more. The “400 @ $150” initiative has the potential to generate $60,000 in donations, that coupled with the matching funds from the School Board will help us achieve our goal.

We can do this together! Please send your tax-deductible donation to:

Strike Up The Band Update

In December of 2012, the South Hamilton Administration, School Board, and Band Department launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $120,000 to update the inventory of school owned instruments.  The majority of the school owned instruments are beyond repair and have simply worn out over time.

The  objective of  the “400 @ $150” fundraising effort is to solicit 400 Hawk Band Alumni, Fans, and Patrons to make a $150 donation towards the goal.  As an extra incentive, the School Board has agreed to match dollar for dollar, the total amount of the contributions generated by this campaign up to $60,000.

The estimated the cost to update  Band Instrument Inventory is $120,000.   As of April 16, 2014 the fundraising campaign has received $55,546.97 in donations.  With the School Board matching that amount,  the  School currently has $111,093.94 towards the target amount.  With $8,906.06 in donations and matching funds remaining ($4,453.03 x 2), the goal is clearly in sight.

If you are interested in joining in this worthy cause, please send your tax-deductible donation to:
